Source: UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) Date: 28 Dec 2003 Iran - Earthquake OCHA Situation Report No. 5 Ref: OCHA/GVA - 2003/0161 OCHA Situation Report No. 5 Iran - Earthquake Occurred on 26 December 2003 The Government of Iran has appealed for international assistance. This report is based on information provided by the United Nations Disaster Assessment and Coordination (UNDAC) team in Bam and Kerman. The UNDAC team has established presence in Tehran, Kerman and in Bam. Reception Centres for international relief teams have been set up in · Kerman (TelNo.: +870 762 498 226) · Bam (TelNo.: +88 21 650 602 417) In addition the UNDAC team has set up an On-Site Operations and Coordination Centre (OSOCC) in Bam to assist the Government of the Islamic Republic of Iran in the coordination of international relief. Situation and International Search and Rescue The UNDAC team describes the situation as follows: 1. The disaster is confined to the city of Bam and the surrounding settlements. As of 28 December the number of casualties is still unclear. 2. Major parts of Bam are again supplied with water and electricity. 3. In a meeting with the Minister of Interior of Iran, the Director of the Iranian Red Crescent, the local emergency coordinator as well as other authorities this morning, there was consensus that NO international SAR teams are required any longer. 4. It is anticipated that the SAR phase will be over today. 5. During the day, the UNDAC team will conduct an assessment to get a more thorough overview about the situation and needs. 6. SAR teams from 16 countries are in Bam. The UNDAC team had a meeting with the SAR team leaders to agree on their assignment. Urgent needs 7. As a result of the meeting with the Minister of Interior, the following urgent needs for food/non food items were highlighted · Rub halls for storage of relief supplies · Medicines (type to be identified) · Plastic Sheeting · Kitchen sets · Stoves for heating and cooking · Blankets · Food supplies (rice, oil, wheat flower) A more comprehensive list of relief items will be submitted later today. Financial Contributions 8. OCHA is prepared to serve as a channel for cash contributions to be used for immediate relief assistance, in coordination with relevant organizations in the United Nations system. For banking details please contact the desk officers indicated below. OCHA provides donor governments with written confirmation and pertinent details concerning the utilization of the funds contributed. 9. OCHA is in close contact with the Iranian authorities in Tehran, New York and Geneva, the Office of the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Tehran, and the UNDAC team in Iran, and will revert with further information as it becomes available. 10.
