지진 피해 어린이를 행복을 되돌려 주기 위해

2006.11.15
It should be the happiest time for children here. A time of presents and laughter---as a reward after a month of resolute fasting. But this Eid ul Fitr is different---so very different, because children and their parents have had so much taken away. Most will have lost someone close, many will have been injured and all now face a struggle for survival. Winter is coming to the treacherous mountains where they live. Soon rain will come and then snow. Already camps for the hundreds of thousands who have lost their homes are springing up. UNICEF is working to make sure that people in tented encampments and villages have access to clean water and proper sanitation. In these conditions the threat of disease is never far away and UNICEF is watching for it. At the same time the organization is mounting a vaccination campaign against measles that has already protected nearly 300,000 children. It is not easy. In some of the worst-hit areas half of the government health workers are dead If the children who try to celebrate this Eid are to have a future UNICEF knows that the sooner they get back to school the better. The agency says that more than 800,000 children are now out of school. In the wrecked classrooms more than 17,000 pupils were killed. But some children are already learning again with exercise books and pencils supplied by UNICEF. Not only is it important to keep brakes from education to a minimum, it's crucial that affected children are given a place where they can feel safe and where some of the damage caused to vulnerable minds can be addressed. This is Martin reporting for UNICEF For every child, advance humanity.
