The people in the town of Bagh are trying to regain something from what they lost. More than eighty per cent of buildings were damaged, leaving a population with nowhere to go. Many ended up in camps like these. Women especially are finding it hard to make do without the things they once had at home. Shaheen's family home is gone and her injured husband is in hospital, leaving her alone with her children and grandchildren in the camp. A big change from what the family once had. Soundbite, Urdu, Shaheen, quake survivor: “I used to have plenty of things. God gave us everything – I had 6 buffalo, cows and goats. But now it is all under the rubble.” To help Shaheen, her grandchildren and thousands like them, UNICEF, along with implementing partner Islamic Relief, is giving out bags to displaced people. These are filled with hygiene items such as soap, toothbrushes and towels. It may seem simple, but many people now don't have the means to buy these everyday things. Soundbite, English, Bilal Akhbar, UNICEF staff: “These are the services we are providing to each family, for a better hygiene condition in the tents so there shouldn’t be any outbreak of epidemic.” Many people who are used to isolated village life, rather than living with neighbours in crowded areas, need to be encouraged to improve hygiene habits, such as proper use of latrines and washing hands. Rabia from UNICEF's partner Islamic relief also gives talks to women about how to best use the items they've been given. People don’t need much persuading - and even young children are glad of the chance to take care of themselves and make some small improvement to their daily lives. *** Asset Name : UNICEF distributes hygiene kits for quake-affected families in Pakistan Asset Duration: 02 min 03 secs Shoot City: Bagh province Shoot Country: Pakistan Shoot Date: Dec 5 2005
