안전한 놀이공간에서 쉼을 얻는 어린이들

12-year-old Shada and her brother Majdi live in Till, a small Palestinian town near Nablus in the West Bank. Shada, who just started 7th grade, loves to study and is the first in her class. Like all children their age, Shada and her brother like to play, but in Till, as in many cities in conflict zones, there aren’t any playgrounds or safe places for them to play. MOM: “They used to play in the streets, but I was always scared. Cars coming and going, all sorts of people walking in the streets, there’s no security, they’re not safe!” But Shada and Majdi now have somewhere to go after school; just recently UNICEF opened a safe play area for children here. The recreational facilities provide children with opportunities to meet, socialize and play in a protected environment. They will present a much-needed escape for young Palestinians affected by the ongoing violence, restrictions of movement and a general economic decline. The playgrounds are managed by local committees. They organize weekly activities, such as group games and sport, to draw children away from the streets and restore a sense of routine into their lives. So far, twenty safe-play areas have been created: 11 in the Gaza strip and 9 in the West Bank---with more to come. The project is part of the United Nations' Child Friendly Cities initiative helping fulfil children’s rights and promote their well-being. From the West Bank, this is Sabine Dolan reporting for UNICEF. For every child, advance humanity. *** Asset Name : Palestinian Children Playing at a UNICEF-Provided Safe Play Area Asset Duration: 01 min 53 secs Shoot City: Till Shoot Country: Others Shoot Date: Sep 15 2006
