교육을 통해 폭력의 위험을 줄이다

2006.11.16
These children in Mexico City are putting together pieces of paper to make words. But this class is more about human values than it is about spelling. One of the words is violence, and the teacher reminds them that often it can happen in their own homes.Because of the discussions in class, seven-year-old Diana-Karin is already thinking about how to deal with violence in the family. If the father gets drunk, you should stop him going out to drink more, she says. That way he’ll give up drinking and then he won’t hit you. Today’s lesson is part of a project sponsored by UNICEF to stop children dropping out of school because of violence both here and at home. It’s called “Education for Peace”. Before the age of 15, more than one in every 25 of the city’s children has dropped out of school. The total is more than 64,000. In another classroom, the “Education for Peace” program has brought together this group of parents. They’re doing exercises to try and recognize the violence that may exist in their own lives and to avoid directing it at their children. More than 1,500 schools in Mexico City are now taking part in the project. UNICEF hopes that eventually “Education for Peace” will spread to the countryside, where levels of everyday violence and absenteeism are likely to be even higher. *** Asset Name : UNICEF: Preventing violence through education in Mexico Asset Duration: 02 min 20 secs Shoot City: Mexico City Shoot Country: Mexico Shoot Date: Nov 21 2005
