가뭄과 영양실조로 고통 받는 케냐 어린이

2006.11.16
Within minutes of being filmed, this child died because help didn’t reach her in time. She was so severely malnourished, that doctors couldn’t even find her veins. Thousands of children in Northern Kenya are also facing starvation from deepening drought. The arid region is reeling from a poor rainy season and this pastoral and agricultural area is the worst hit in the country. This time of year livestock should be healthy and grazing- instead they are dead or dying. Experts say the situation is only destined to get worse. With critical water shortages affecting more than half a million people, overburdened medical facilities and increasing dropout rates from school, conditions for children here are desperate. Malnourished children are particularly vulnerable to diseases such as malaria, diarrhea and pneumonia. An estimated 2.5 million people will need food aid over the next six months. And although more than a million are currently receiving assistance, much more is needed. UNICEF and the British government are supporting programs like this one that feeds hundreds of children every day. Special meals are prepared throughout the day and given to the most malnourished children. UNICEF supports government efforts to respond to the crisis, providing emergency nutrition supplements and health supplies to severely affected areas. This is Jane O’Brien reporting for UNICEF. For every child, advance humanity. *** Asset Name : UNICEF is Providing Food Supplements and Water to Hundreds of Malnourished Children Asset Duration: 01 min 42 secs Shoot City: Wajir Shoot Country: Kenya Shoot Date: Dec. 6, 2005
