어린이 생존을 돕는 보건과 영양 프로그램

2006.11.16
It’s immunization day in Chieng Khoa commune in northwestern Vietnam. Mothers and their young children line up outside the local health center, many having travelled hours to get here. Some babies receive TB shots; others get vaccinations against measles, tetanus and other diseases. Pregnant mothers come in for a regular check up. It’s basic health care that’s critical to improving women’s and children’s health, especially in remote regions like this. Chieng Khoa is dominated by ethnic minorities, particularly Thais. While child and maternal mortality rates are relatively low across Vietnam, they are much higher in minority areas. In some places, more than 40 percent of children under five are malnourished. UNICEF is supporting Vietnam in providing vaccines and vitamin A supplements for these children, and promoting proper nutrition and education. Nat of nutrition lesson Luong Thi Chay is a mother of two children. She is worried her four-month-old son is not getting enough nourishment. She has joined this nutrition class in her village to learn how best to feed her baby. Sessions like these help improve eating habits and dispel traditional wisdom that might not be effective. SOUNDBITE, Vietnamese, Do Thi Tuyen, assistant doctor: “People here don’t have a good understanding about proper nutrition. They only think that if you feed your children they will grow up. We are now integrating nutrition education programmes with the local community and awareness is rising. But we still have a long way to go.” With improved knowledge and regular access to health care, more children in rural Vietnam can hope to grow up healthier, their future no longer stunted by difficult terrain. *** Asset Name : UNICEF: Health care and nutrition boost babies’ survival in Viet Nam Asset Duration: 02 min 10 secs Shoot City: Chieng Khoa commune Shoot Country: Vietnam Shoot Date: May 12 2005
