Wrapping up two days of talks in London, the Global Partner's Forum on Children Affected by HIV and AIDS is promising action. Baroness Royall of the UK House of Lords says, "Our focus must be on action. We must have action to improve the lives of children, their families and their communities. But we also have to act because the world is watching." Over two days, the Forum brought together senior level decision makers to make recommendations to accelerate actions for children affected by HIV/AIDS. The emphasis was on partnership. The two-day forum is hosted by UNICEF and the British government, and sponsored by UNAIDS. "Without developing countries having the capacity and the money to employ the doctors and nurses and buy the drugs and run the clinics, do the testing, decide when people need ART treatment, you won't keep people alive," says Hilary Benn/UK Secretary of State for International Development. "And without the international community to offer its support, its money, and its assistance, none of these things are going to happen, so this really has to be a joint effort if we're going to beat this epidemic." Closing the meeting, UNICEF's HIV/AIDS chief tied the forum into the overall goals of the UNITE FOR CHILDREN UNITE AGAINST AIDS campaign. UNICEF's HIV/AIDS Chief, Peter McDermott, says, "On behalf of UNICEF, I really do think that the spirit of this meeting is really the spirit of the campaign. We're beginning to unite for children; and by uniting for children, we're uniting against HIV/AIDS, and that's what we're really about. Thank you very much." At Lancaster House in London, this is Thomas Nybo reporting for UNICEF. For every child, advance humanity. *** Asset Name : UNICEF: Partners at Global Forum on children and HIV/AIDS pledge to act Asset Duration: 01 min 38 secs Shoot City: London Shoot Country: United Kingdom Shoot Date: Feb. 10, 200
