In the Vangaindrano district, located on the south-eastern coast of Madagascar, behind the green and lush landscapes dotted with rice paddies, one out of five children is malnourished. A series of disasters – repeated floods, crop disease and poor cash crops production – has exhausted the community’s ability to cope. With financial support from the European Commission and Norway, the Government, UNICEF and humanitarian partners have set up an emergency nutritional rehabilitation program, focusing on the most vulnerable, a total of 24,000 children under five and 4,500 pregnant and lactating women. In addition to five fixed therapeutic feeding centers, a total of 24 outreach therapeutic and supplementary feeding services provide appropriate nutritional and medical care to women and children, most of them living in remote and scattered villages. SOUNDBITE (French) - Virginie Razanantsoa, UNICEF field Coordinator in Vangaindrano “We try to go as far as we can to reach all the people, but most of the villages are very isolated, and roads and bridges are in very bad shape.” Hundreds of women and children are lining up at the mobile feeding unit of Marovato, a village about 30 kilometres south of Vangaindrano, the district capital. On a weekly basis, all children and pregnant and lactating women are being screened and monitored; the malnourished amongst them receive therapeutic food as well as basic medical care. This is the fourth time that Bina comes to this feeding unit with Pedinisoa, her eighteen-month old daughter. SOUND BITE (Malagasy) - mother, Bina: “At the beginning, my child was really weak and emaciated, but now I can see she is getting healthier since she can eat properly”. After three months of operations and despite access difficulties, over 90 percent of the severely malnourished children have been already treated. SOUND BITE (French) - Jean-Claude Boidin, Ambassador, chief of delegation, European Commission in Madagascar “We’re very pleased with the way this operation is going, and we’ll increase our support to development efforts in a very isolated region that remains vulnerable to such food crisis”. For the time being, this life-saving operation enables children to regain their health and helps communities to bridge the gap until the next harvest. *** Asset Name : UNICEF: Quick response saves the lives of undernourished children in Madagascar Asset Duration: 02 min 09 secs Shoot City: Vangaindrano Shoot Country: Madagascar Shoot Date: Mar 1 2006
