UN, 아프리카 사헬지역의 국가 지원을 위해 9천2백만 불 호소

2006.11.16
This is the start of the lean season for the Sahel – one of the poorest regions on Earth -- and it’s starting to show. Despite a good recent harvest, many families in Niger have sold off their grain to pay debts from other times. This is what they’re down to -- the most basic means of survival, berries and animal feed. Already rates of acute malnutrition in children are at emergency levels. Even at the best of times this region faces some of the highest malnutrition rates in the world. Last year was one of the worst ever for the region. Now they’re worrying signs that thousands more children may die this year unless help gets out fast. Soundbite (English): Ester Ruiz de Azua, Action Against Hunger “The people that are going to the villages for the moderate malnutrition and they inform us that right now in some villages it is almost empty that means that in the region it is going to be in the next month or two months really serious.” This is the sort of life saving action that is needed – checking charts, monitoring growth and scaling up supplementary feeding for little ones still strong enough. With an average of eight children per family, it’s a hand-to-mouth existence A new U.N. funding appeal plans to change what sometimes has seemed inevitable. Soundbite (English): Aboudou Karimou Adjibade, UNICEF Representative “Each time we wait, a lot of people are moving from chronic malnutrition to moderate malnutrition status and if nothing is done to severe malnutrition status. Each time we can prevent, invest at the early stage we are sure we are saving the lives of thousands and thousands of children in Niger.” As the Sahel region holds its breathe, humanitarian organizations aim to stop the cycle of early deaths and avoid a repeat of the worst of times for the region’s children.
