“One of the worst consequences of the nuclear disaster was that we now have over 4,000 cases of children suffering from thyroid cancer, but you know, thyroid cancer is only the tip of the iceberg, but even in normal times because of iodine deficiency, hundreds of thousands of children suffer from poor health. They are brain damaged.” “So our message was let us make sure that on this 20th anniversary of Chernobyl that all the countries and all the leaders commit themselves to making sure that all the salt consumed in Belarus, Ukraine and the Russian Federation is iodized. If so, we will be able to deal with one major consequence of the disaster.” “One of the things UNICEF is trying to do in all of these three countries is to provide people with information, communication, knowledge, facts, so they are not so worried and we are also working particularly with the school system to provide education on healthy lifestyles, on exercise, on sports, positive outlook on life so children grow up more optimistic rather than depressed and sad as their parents are.” *** Asset Name : UNICEF calls for salt iodization in three countries most affected by the Chernobyl disaster Asset Duration: 02 min 09 secs Shoot City: New York Shoot Country: United States Shoot Date: Apr 15 2006
