2006.11.16
This mother and her child, survivors of the earthquake in Central Java, are on their way to a UNICEF-supported immunization campaign. Many mothers have already arrived, waiting anxiously with their children. Soundbite (English) David Hipgrave, Chief of Health and Nutrition, UNICEF Indonesia “Today we’re here in Banyusoco village in Gunung Kidul district, one of the districts affected by the Yogjakarta earthquake. We’re kicking off a measles campaign to prevent kids under the age of 5 against measles which can be a major problem during emergencies.” After losing almost everything in the earthquake, these mothers are determined to save their children in the aftermath of the disaster. One by one, the children are immunized against measles, a disease that could easily spread in crowded camps. Drops of vitamin A supplement are also given to boost their immune system. To prevent infections from cuts and wound they may suffer, the mothers are protected against tetanus. In the coming days, the campaign will reach some 320,000 children in the quake-affected area with measles vaccine. And more than 1 million adults and adolescents will be immunized against tetanus.
