Emergency supplies from UNICEF arrive in Beirut as an appeal is launched for 23.8 million dollars. These first boxes contain water kits of soap and purification tablets and are being given to families who have been forced out of their homes by fighting. Many people fleeing the violence are struggling to find clean drinking water and lack proper sanitation. Soundbite (English) Roberto Laurenti, UNICEF Representative in Lebanon: “It’s unfortunately what we are facing ourselves here, trying to respond to this critical situation, to their demands, to their basic needs, but for this we will certainly need the assistance and the generosity of the international community to assist us to translate our plans into deeds.” This school in Beirut is one of hundreds in the country to be turned into makeshift shelters. Almost half of those seeking refuge here are children. Most travelled from the south of Lebanon, the focus of Israeli action against Hezbollah. This girl is comforted by a UNICEF worker. We came under a lot of attacks, she says. A lot. I was afraid and I cried. UNICEF tries to help children deal with such trauma. This girl describes how she can play and be happy here. She listens to music but adds: I miss my home. Other emergency supplies from UNICEF have been dispatched and the first major shipment of UN aid is due to arrive this week. But with Lebanon’s infrastructure in tatters it is already proving difficult to deliver. Hundreds of people are living in open air, spending their nights in open air and hundreds of kids suffering, from not only having lost houses, properties, relatives to share here their problems they need to face to maintain their life at an acceptable level. UNICEF is doing its best to try to mitigate all the stress and trauma. It is maybe not a visible scar like the infrastructure that’s been destroyed but it’s no less important. *** Asset Name : UNICEF: Supplies arrive in Lebanon as the displaced struggle to find clean water and sanitation Asset Duration: 02 min 04 secs Shoot City: Beirut Shoot Country: Lebanon Shoot Date: Jul 25 2006
