Many hundreds of homes and businesses were burnt during the unrest which flared in Timor-Leste over recent months. More than 150,000 people were displaced. Families and children fled to relatives around the country or to refugee camps where they now live with their fears. CG: LURDES FREITAS, AGE 10, INTERNALLY DISPLACED PERSON (TETUM) “Sunu ami nia uma, baku ami nia kolega sira, tiru ami, ami ba ami uma ami tauk.” VERBATIM: “They burnt our house. They beat our friends. They shot at us. We’re afraid to go home.” This is one of 60 camps where the children have had their normal schooling totally disrupted. Here 300 kids of primary school age have registered for emergency classes which UNICEF has established with camp teacher volunteers. UNICEF country head of education is Peter Ninnes. CG : PETER NINNES, UNICEF Education Project Officer (UPSOT: ENGLISH) “First of all we are trying to provide some informal learning activities that are school based, literacy based and so on to give the students something to do something during the holidays because they haven’t had much to do and having a routine, having some activities in the classroom will help with their psychosocial recovery as well. At the same time we are trying to work with the government the government to undertake a “Back to School” campaign which will encourage children to go back to school, for parents to support the school and the community to generally work together to get schools functioning again.” The Campaign begins with a school-in-a-box. Basic educational tools are provided. Pencils, pens and exercise books- are distributed to each child registered in the camp by name. But for the displaced teachers working alongside UNICEF, as important as books are activities to rekindle the children’s enthusiasm. UNICEF local staff, Jorge Mouzinho, has been showing them how - using songs and silly dances – to bring fun back into the camp. This is Max Stahl Reporting For UNICEF.
