SOT: Mariam Kamal El Dine, 15, Srifa, Lebanon (Arabic/English translation): “All our best memories are here. It’s where we used to visit our grandparents and relatives. It’s where we grew up and spent our childhood.” Making her way through the rubble that is her past, Mariam Kamal El Dine has returned to the home she fled with her family. A home that was destroyed during the most recent war. Her parents have survived many wars in Lebanon. Now the family is rebuilding again. Here are their thoughts. SOT: Mariam Kamal El Dine (Arabic/English translation): “There is an atmosphere of fear. We feel miserable and emotionally drained. We have been separated from our friends. For now, daily life goes on and the family makes do with what has been salvaged. SOT Najdi Kamal El Dine, Mariam’s Mother (Arabic/English translation): “You can fund everything you need, but the problem is you can’t store fresh food at home. For example Hamad bought a chicken yesterday. But it was ruined because there is no electricity for the fridge. Even if we turn the generator on, it’s not enough to power everything.” SOT: Sara Kamal El Dine, aged 14, Mariam’s Sister (Arabic/English translation): “Srifa has suffered vast destruction. Before the war, we used to go to the center and there would be many people there. There would be a good atmosphere and we had fun. Now if you go there, you don’t feel like walking around.” Mariam’s father, Hamad is a school principal. Together they visit her old school. The school will remain closed until repairs can be made. SOT: Mariam (Arabic/English translation): “It’s a painful to see this. We built our dreams here. We have great memories of this school. We had a wonderful time here and now all our ambitions are lost.” But Mariam does see beyond all that is lost. She hopes one day to become a journalist and make many friends. SOT Mariam (Arabic/English translation): “Some of our dreams and aspirations have been shattered. But I am sure, many things will change in our future.” This is Rachel Warden reporting for UNICEF television Unite For Children *** Asset Name : Lebanese teenagers speak out about the war Asset Duration: 02 min 48 secs Shoot City: N/A Shoot Country: N/A Shoot Date: N/A
