화산 폭발로 오염된 물을 정화시키는 일

2006.11.17
Water, water everywhere but not a drop to drink . . . Surrounded by water, but the huge volcano on Comoros island pollutes this life source -- Mount Karthala, one of the world's most active volcanoes, has erupted three times in the past year spewing toxic ash over the island and poisoning the water supply. Clean water supplies are seldom on tap here and a vicious cycle of stagnant open water reservoirs, bad habits and poor sanitation has meant that too many children fall prey to water borne killers like cholera and diarrhea. So a major project has just been completed to rehabilitate and cover 1 500 reservoirs throughout the country. Locals were trained to keep the project flowing smoothly and protect their precious resource from volcanic lava, ash and general grime. From the top of government down, the project has brought hope: SOUNDBITE (French), Ikililou Dhoinine, Vice President: “Even though we know that we are completely surrounded by the sea, there is a water shortage. We really have enormous problems with water. It's very tricky. We will continue to need the kinds of interventions that we have from UNICEF's rehabilitation and protection of our water reserves.” Down in the village the locals are in charge of the reservoirs and they’re already noticing a difference: SOUNDBITE (French), village elder one: “Children were always sick with stomach problems, diarrhoea, all that.” SOUNDBITE (French), village elder two: “It's starting to get better.” SOUNDBITE (French), young boy: “I am all for it. Because now the water we drink is good.” With greater efforts like this, Comorien children could spend less time fetching water and more time flourishing on their tropical Indian Ocean island. *** Asset Name : Comoros: Cleaning up water source following volcano eruptions Asset Duration: 02 min 17 secs Shoot City: The Comoros islands Shoot Country: N/A Shoot Date: 18 Sep 2006
