학교 환경 개선은 어린이 교육환경을 낫게 합니다

2006.12.27
The children at the San Antonio elementary school in the central Philippines are proof that a clean environment, is the best environment when it comes to learning. Thanks to a water and sanitation project undertaken by UNICEF and its local partners, many of the classrooms now have toilets - a huge improvement on conditions that existed before. SOUNDBITE (English), Benny Blancaver, head teacher, San Antonio Elementary School: “Before, the children used the back of the school as their toilet.” And the availability now of clean running water, has helped introduce a whole culture of hygiene. SOUNDBITE (English), Benny Blancaver, head teacher, San Antonio Elementary School: “They had to get their pack lunch and eat without cleaning their hands. But now the children are trained to wash their hands and wash their faces before they eat.” Supporting the efforts of municipal authorities, improvements are gradually being introduced throughout the school system in this region – often, running water and flushing toilets arriving in some places for the first time. At the end of class, student Garie returns to his home. He lives just across the road, but at his house, the water is still drawn by hand from the well. By comparison, his school is now served by an electric pump. Its upkeep, provides a good example of innovative ownership involving the whole school community. Each student’s family pays a nominal two pesos per month for its maintenance. SOUNDBITE (English), Salvador Alba, Municipal Planning Officer: “The parents and the students must have a sense of ownership of the project, because if they do not own the project they will not love the project and keep and maintain it as it is.” And the proof of that love is in the school attendance figures, with more students coming to class since the improvements were introduced.
