엄마와 아기를 위한 보호센터

2006.12.27
Meet Niko. He’s 4-years-old. And this is his home. He is proud of his new twin brothers David and Giorgi. His mother Maia and her young family were abandoned so they came here, the home for abandoned mothers. This shelter funded by UNICEF and World Vision gives her the chance to keep her family with her. She is grateful to the people here for the assistance to her and her children she says, until she can get back on her feet and find a job as cook. The causes of abandonment are usually poverty, unemployment and the deteriorating social climate here. Families cannot cope so children are abandoned at birth or institutionalized. But at shelters like this, mothers are encouraged to keep their children. In Georgia, there are more than 5,000 children living in residential care. Soundbite (English): Giovanna Barberis, UNICEF Representative, Georgia: “It provides an alternative to child abandonment. Mothers are staying with their babies. They are helped to continue to be together finding some way of living and therefore facilitating and supporting the family in being together.” Georgia is a country of strict traditions and families may not accept children born out of wedlock. Irina came to the shelter directly from the Maternity Hospital. As part of the employment assistance, she was offered to study as a seamstress at a local design studio. It gives her the chance to learn sewing and design techniques. She will be able to become a professional seamstress. Soundbite (Russian): Irina, single mother: “I am more confident in myself now, I want to learn more and probably one day I will be able to open my own shop, or even my own design studio.” The shelter and the training give Irina and the other mothers the chance to keep their babies with them. When they can support themselves, they will move out into the society again. Children have a right to grow up in a family environment. The center spreads the message to people that a baby is a treasure, not a threat, and a new addition to the family will not impoverish, but enrich it.
