Thousands of vaccinators move house to house across Iraq to immunize every child under five years old against polio. Iraq has been polio free since 2,000, in spite if sanctions, war and continuing insecurity. It’s created a difficult working environment for these health carers, and UNICEF and the World Health Organization are calling on everybody to ensure their safety over the next 5 days of the ongoing immunization campaign. Some areas have been easier to access than others. 95 per cent of children were immunized nationwide during the first phase of the campaign in November, but in the more dangerous parts of Baghdad only 63 per cent were reached. Iraq’s polio National Immunization Days aim to give two doses of oral polio vaccine to every Iraqi child under five years – that’s 4.8 million in total – during campaigns held one month apart. Success is critical if Iraq is to maintain its disease free status.
