'Requiem for Darfur' to raise aid and awareness for victims of conflict A mass for the dead … written by composer Giuseppe Verdi in 1873. But on this night as artists come together in New York for a final rehearsal Verdi’s mass is transformed into a memorial for a 21st century tragedy - the ongoing killing in the Darfur region of Sudan. Soundbite. George Matthew, artistic director, Requiem for Darfur (English) “The Requiem for Darfur is much more than a concert. The concert is the heart of it. But it’s really a coming together.” Artistic director George Matthew directs musicians and singers from 45 ensembles and four continents on Monday January 22 at Carnegie Hall. Proceeds from the concert will be donated to UNICEF and other relief agencies, for programs in Darfur and in camps for the displaced. Hosting the concert - UNICEF goodwill ambassador Mia Farrow, who has travelled to Darfur to highlight the urgent needs of the women and children in the region. In addition to the more than 200,000 dead … the victims of the four-year old conflict in Darfur include 2 million people uprooted from their homes … subjected to constant terror: Soundbite. George Matthew, artistic director, Requiem for Darfur (English) "What it is most of all is music developed on the themes of fear and terror. And terror of death and the fear of the unknown and most of all the fear of becoming nothing … Verdi’s music is tremendous testament to what the human spirit is capable when facing the most terrifying conditions. And somewhere in there is defiance in the face of fear.” A benediction for those who find little peace in life … This is Elizabeth Kiem reporting for UNICEF Television.
