* Paris conference to ‘Free Children From War’ Delegates from more than 55 countries arriving at the Centre for International Conferences in Paris. The Free Children from War conference was jointly hosted by French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy and UNICEF Executive Director Ann M Veneman. Opening the two-day meeting, the French Foreign Minister challenged delegates never to give up on children. Bite: Philippe Douste-Blazy, French Foreign Affairs Minister “For many observers, a child who has known nothing but war, a child for whom the Kalashnikov is the only way to make a living, and for whom the bush is the most welcoming community, is a child lost for ever for peace and development. I contest this view. We have the means to conquer this problem. We can do more. That is the aim of this meeting. For these children and young people it is essential to prove that another life is possible.” UNICEF’s Executive Director called for a broad partnership of governments, donors and organizations. Bite: Ann M Veneman, UNICEF Executive Director “We know from experience that it is possible to reintegrate former child soldiers especially when they are provided with the education and skills needed to become positive and productive members of society. The capacity and resilience of the children should never be underestimated nor that of their families or communities” 26-year-old Ishmael Beah, a former child soldier in his native Sierra Leone implored governments to provide funding to help rehabilitate young people like him. Ishmael Beah, Former child soldier “No one is born violent I believe. No child in Africa, Latin America or Asia, wants to be part of war. No one wants to do that. These are situations children are forced into. But over time because they are traumatized and constantly using drugs this becomes habitual, the only reality they know.” His message of hope and redemption was heard and loud and clear. In Paris, this is Dan Thomas reporting for UNICEF Television. Unite for children.
