* Severe flooding displaces thousands in Jakarta * February 6, Behind the skyscrapers that dot the Indonesian capital, massive flooding has forced more than 300-thousand people from their homes. Dozens have been killed. Most either drowned or were electrocuted while trying to evacuate. Emergency workers on rafts rescued scores of people who were stranded on the roofs of their homes after water as deep as 4 meters inundated their neighborhoods. Thousands more sought refuge at local mosques where officials are trying desperately to provide enough food, clean water and medical care. But they are the luckier ones. There are still thousands more who are camping out on sidewalks and open areas. This mother says that she couldn’t get out and didn’t know how to swim while and there was only one inner tube to help everyone through the water. And after days of rain, new concerns are emerging: Diseases. There are fears that dengue fever, malaria and even bird flu could spread in the aftermath of the worst floods the city has seen in more than five years. There are also reports that, in some areas, supplies of antibiotics are running low. Emergency officials say there is an immediate need for food, clothes, blankets, medicine, sanitation facilities and water tanks. Soundbite (English), Lina Sofiani, UNICEF Pro ject Officer: “UNICEF Indonesia already received the request from a government counterpart to provide supplies in\ water and sanitation as well as measles campaign for the children in IDP camps." Businesses and officials were also trying to assess the economic impact of the floods, which have caused power blackouts, cut telecommunications and made many key roads impassable. The capital saw some relief early this week when the sun emerged for a few hours but forecasters warn the rainy season is far from over and more flooding could be just a day away.
