* UNICEF aid reaches children and families affected by Jakarta floods * Shoot Date: Feb 2007 More than a week after devastating floods pummelled the Indonesian capital, the big clean up has begun. After days of torrential rain…. Thousands of people are returning to their homes and trying to rebuild their lives. But not everyone has a home to go back to yet. This elderly woman says she has been at this shelter for a week and doesn’t know when she can leave. But aide is getting out. More than 150-thousand dollars worth of emergency supplies are being distributed to Jakarta flood victims. One of the top priorities is clean water. UNICEF is sending in dozens of giant water bladders designed to provide nearly a quarter of a million people with drinkable water. Soundbite (English) Lina Sofiani, UNICEF Project Officer: "We distributed our emergency supplies to our government counterpart the Ministry of Health. We have distributed 8,346 hygiene kits, 5,000 jerry cans from our warehouse and also water purification tablets." UNICEF also urged donors not to distribute infant formula. Not only could it discourage breastfeeding but it can also make babies ill when parents mix the formula with unclean water. Hygiene kits that include soap and other basic necessities are being handed out at shelters across the city. There are increased concerns of disease spreading. Local hospitals are already reporting high number of patients with water borne diseases. The flooding that hit the Indonesian capital last week has killed more than 80 people. And there are fears that this may not be the end. The rainy season arrived late and more heavy downpours are expected.
