* Mia Farrow visits displaced families in Central African Republic * 15 Feb 2007 Scores of villages destroyed and abandoned amid the ongoing violence in the northwest parts of Central African Republic. UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Mia Farrow is here to witness the turmoil firsthand, in hope of bringing more attention and international aid to this troubled region. Soundbite (English), Mia Farrow, UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador: “We are on the road to Paoua, and we have just passed village after village after village after village after village, we have lost count, destroyed either completely like this, and some are just vacated because the population is absolutely terrified.” Ragged villagers emerge from the bush to speak to aid workers and journalists. They run away quickly upon hearing vehicles approaching – fear of another attack by armed soldiers. The crowd settles down when they see that the cars bring not soldiers but humanitarian workers. Soundbite (Sango), Yvette Lockoule, villager: "The people saw soldiers killing people and burning huts and when they saw that they fled into the bush.” Concerned about the possible recruitment of child soldiers, Ms. Farrow and UNICEF Regional Director Esther Guluma talk to a rebel leader. Soundbite (English), Esther Guluma, UNICEF Regional Director for Central and West Africa: “The villages have been burnt, they can’t return, out of fear, to their villagers. They live out in the open, they don’t have access to the medical care, they don’t have access to shelter, they have no food. If the children are sick, they have no means to treat them. It’s a hard life. If I ever saw a sustain humanitarian emergency, this is it.” Since the latest conflict erupted in 2005, hundreds of thousands of people have been forced to flee their homes, and the misery of the country’s women and children seems nowhere near the end.
