* UNICEF: Executive Director joins Starbucks and Ethos ‘Walk for Water’ * 22 Mar 2007 Highlighting the global water crisis, more than 250 schoolchildren and hundreds of other New Yorkers participated in a Walk for Water on today’s World Water Day. The walk symbolizes the difficult task people in developing countries must undertake to get safe drinking water for their families. Soundbite (English), Ann M. Veneman, UNICEF Executive Director: “I think it is hard for us in the US and the developed world to understand sometimes, there are many people who live in houses where there is no water, no running water, no sanitation. With simple technologies, boreholes, you can provide a community a water source so that people don’t spend hours everyday walking to get water, to provide for their families.” The event was organized by the Starbucks Coffee Company and its Ethos Water brand. Many Starbucks employees, customers and partners were encouraged to participate. Soundbite (English), Peter Thum, Founder of Ethos Water and Vice President of Starbucks: ”The problem of the world water crisis has is that it doesn’t have a voice. So those billions of people need our help, and the World Water Day is the perfect opportunity, today. That’s why we are here is to raise the awareness of this issue.” Starbucks and Ethos hope to raise at least $10 million dollars over five years to help non-profit organizations involved in water issues. Through events like this, they are also able to educate more people and empower them to play a personal role in alleviating the global crisis on water - a basic right for all people.
