지구촌의 이슈에 관한 어린이 의견 - Fernanda Winter

2007.06.07
* Young people debate global issues at Junior 8 Summit * Various 17-year-old Fernanda Winter will represent Brazil in this year’s Junior 8 Summit. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Fernanda Winter, age 18: “I hope I can exchange experiences and ideas with other adolescents and young people, especially about their forms of social participation in their own countries. I want to find out how is the situation of HIV/aids in other places and discuss the issue of social participation of young people in each country. I think it will be a great experience. I really expect that we can build something together and be able to represent young people from all over the world and to present our proposals to global leaders” Fernanda was chosen for her active involvement in a nation wide programme on HIV. It reaches some 7 million Brazilian youth and teaches them how to protect themselves from HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases. She is also a member of a local youth movement that promotes children’s and adolescents’ rights. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Fernanda Winter, age 18: I started at MIAL (Movement Inter-Adolescents in Lavras) when I was 13. It mad a huge difference in my life, because I learned the importance of joining forces to achieve something. By yourself, you can’t go anywhere. When you meet people that are aiming at the same objectives and find a common cause, I feel it is beautiful. Together we can get anything we want.” Last year, Fernanda was forced to quit school because she participated in demonstrations to demand free transportation for students. This year, she enrolled in a new school, and has been embraced by students and teachers. SOUNDBITE (Portuguese) Fernanda Winter, age 18: I would like to continue working for social justice. I want to study Social Sciences at the University and hope to be always connected to the youth. I think young people have a special power to live and to fight for what they want. I believe we have to invest in young people and in education to transform things. I want to pursuit this ideal.”
