* ECHO funds support for children in Palestine Asset Duration: 01 min 42 secs Shoot City: Al Mawasi, Gaza Shoot Country: N/A * Oct 2, 2006 Palestinian children snatch a rare moment of fun at a monthly festival organized by UNICEF and its partners to help them cope with the violence of their daily lives. Soundbite (English): Dan Rohrmann, UNICEF special representative: "These festivals are important because they are about protecting childhood. It’s an opportunity for children to be children which is rare here in Gaza because they live in an environment of extraordinary fear and violence and insecurity." The festivals are part of a major operation involving teams of social workers and psychologists who are ready to assist children in the event of any emergency. They reach some 3,000 children and 2,000 parents every month. The project is supported by the Humanitarian Aid Department of the European Commission. Soundbite (English): Herve Caiveau, Humanitarian Aid Department of the European Commission: “The Humanitarian Aid Department of the European Commission has an excellent relationship with UNICEF. Together we can reach children in need in a very fast way. For example, UNICEF with our funds and through the psycho-social teams provides immediate support to children in need, like these in Gaza.” Ninety-one children already this year have been killed in the West Bank and Gaza – almost double the number killed during the whole of 2005. The chance to swim and play on the beach restores some sense of normalcy and helps reduce the stress and anxiety that otherwise affects their lives.
