* FC Barcelona scores new goals for AIDS-affected children in South Africa * 20 Jun 2007 It was a rhythmic riot of bright flamenco dancers, African drumming, salsa and the uniquely South African trumpet - the Vuvuzela - footballs beautiful noise. But it was the chance to see heroes of the beautiful game in action that filled the Pretoria stadium with 50,000 adoring fans. The friendly match between Barcelona and Mamelodi Sundowns was a first for the country that will host Africans first World Cup in 2010. The sporting dress rehearsal brought another first - the biggest ever gift to UNIECF South African. The donation of more than 100,000 dollars from the owners of Sundown’s is at the heart of the matter. The Motsepe’s unprecedented contribution signals a new era in corporate giving to UNIECF South Africa. And the reason for the gift and why Barca wears the UNIECF logo is far from the football field. It lies in the missing face of AIDS, even in middle income South Africa child mortality rate have nearly doubled in ten years largely due to HIV/AIDS. Babies heaving for breath, failing to breathe, and all too often failing to live. The region is already dealing with one of the highest HIV infection rates in the world, leaving startling numbers of aids orphans and struggling grannies in counties like Swaziland where Barcia supports UNIECF programming with 1.9 million dollars this year. To give real meaning to their slogan ‘More than a Club’ Barca has committed $1.9 million dollars every year for the next 5 years to UNIECF, thus the logo. It seems to have added not only to their huge fan base but also to the growing demand for their t-shirts. After a thrilling match and a 2-1 victory for the visitors, Barca’s heroes left more than their t-shirts behind, new fans and a new awareness of scoring goals for children’s needs are part of the memories left as the rainbow nation gets ready for 2010.
