* UNICEF: Burkinabe communities struggle to support early childhood education centers * 20 Feb 2007 Here in the Ouagadougou suburbs, it is school time. These little ones are heading to the bisongo – a community-based learning centre supported by UNICEF and the Catholic Relief Service, an American NGO. Ms Odile Segda is in charge of a grade five class of 96 students, including 50 girls. Thanks to the nearby bisongo these girls are no longer being kept at home to look after little ones. Sound (French) Fatimata Oueda: “I am glad to be at school because the teacher helps us learn our lessons correctly.” Back at the bisongo, Helène Nikiema, one of the three teachers hired from within the community, is telling a story to the children The preschool learning center greatly favors early childhood education for both girls and boys. It also spares mothers the trouble of having to look after their young ones all day. The bisongo also values sanitation and encourages the children to regularly wash their hands. What is so special with this bisongo is the fact that it provides free meals to children at midday; comprised mainly of cereals. This meal is very important for Christine Zoungrana, the bisongo hand pump manager. Sound (Mooré) Christine Zoungrana, organizer of extra-curricular activities: “The little one who has not reached school-age can attend a bisongo. He learns a lot of things and benefits from free meals.” The profits generated by the community hand pump help to improve the infrastructures of the bisongo. After lunch, the little ones go back home. Erika, another student of the bisongo, has headed home to meet with her mother, who is a small shopkeeper. Sound (Mooré) Jeanne Rakissaga : “I think that girls’ education is a good thing. When they are grown up, the girls can take care of themselves and take care of their parents.”
