* UNICEF: Progress report urges new commitment to Millennium Development Goals Extreme poverty…Despite progress in lifting people out of poverty around the world, an estimated 980 million people still live on less than one dollar a day. This year marks the halfway point to achieving the Millennium Development Goals - a set of eight global commitments set forth 7 years ago at the United Nations to change this staggering statistic. Nearly every country in the world has pledged to achieve the goals known as the MDGs by the year 2015 and the UN has issued a progress report highlighting successes yet warning that much work remains to be done. Critical to this work – is the wellbeing of children because Children are the most vulnerable. When basic needs like food, water, sanitation and health care are not met – Children are the first to die. SOT: ANN M. VENEMAN, UNICE Executive Director (English): "If you look at the issue of hunger, you also look at the issue of children. Children are central; they are at the heart of the Millennium Development Goals." Tackling poverty and hunger, educating all primary school aged children, combating HIV/AIDS and other diseases and reducing child and maternal mortality are among the MDGs that relate directly to children. UNICEF works with partners toward reaching the MDGs and the progress report shows some promising results to date. More children in developing countries are going to school and Child mortality has declined worldwide. Nevertheless, reaching the goals will rely on stepped up commitments – by governments, the international community along with EVERY segment of society. With children at the center … and through collective will … and collective action … the goals can … and must … be met.
