* UNICEF: Medical camps treat children and families displaced by floods in Bihar
* 01 Aug 2007

Recent floods in India… considered the worst in decades…

Over 12 million people have been displaced by flooding in Bihar state, in northern India. 1.5 million of those are children under the age of 5. Schools and hospitals have closed, and medical help to flood-affected areas is sporadic. From the capital city of Patna… 37 mobile medical units were dispatched to the nine worst-affected districts. Their mission? To vaccinate children against measles, give them vitamin A doses and provide much-needed medical treatment.

More than 1,000 people from five villages in Bihar lost their homes and livelihoods, and now live on this embankment. As word spread about the medical camp, people poured in great numbers. This is the first time they have received medical attention since the floods.

Dr. Pravin Kumar SOT: Dr. Pravin Kumar, Bihar Medical Hospital: We are giving measles vaccinations, from the nine months to the ten years, and it is a prophylaxis, because as the water will recede, there may be chances of outbreaks of measles infection.”

As many as 1300 people were treated in the camps… and thousands were helped… as Bihar residents struggle to get back on their feet. After… people returned to their camps on the embankment… still without homes… but with better chances for their children’s good health.
