* ICC Twenty20 Cricket contest boosts AIDS campaign

* 24 Sep 2007

With the T20 cricket tournament wrapping up in South Africa, the Cricketing world was rapt with attention, with India finally winning the cup.

But it was in the middle of all of the sporting action that the ICC made good, yet again, on lifting the banner for HIV and AIDS prevention.

High flying sports events might be far from their minds, but they are just happy to meet some of their heroes.

And though some of the players need some work on their moves, there were other local celebrities to help them out.

SOUNDBITE Yvonne Duncan, UNICEF Communication Officer South Africa:
“These world-class players became children themselves and were able to just let go to their professional sports demeanor and to play and to record public service announcements that help to influence the behavior of the children who are their fans and of the adults who are their fans. In between the practices and the matches, players took time out to meet with their biggest fans to promote the message of the global campaign for children and AIDS.”

SOUNDBITE Malcolm Speed, CEO ICC: “HIV and AIDS is, of our generation, that is the major pandemic that we face. Anything positive that sportspeople can do to alleviate the suffering of those who are afflicted with HIV and AIDS or alert young people to the risks, to methods that are available to minimize the risks of infection, prevent infection, they should all be out there doing as much as they can.”

Will the last ball bowled the excitement will fade as the next cricket tournament gets going, but the message of the ICC and the Global Campaign will last a lot longer.
