* UNICEF: Joint UN Mission visits cyclone survivors in Bangladesh

One week after a category 4 cyclone struck their communities, the children of Bangladesh are in urgent need of assistance.

UNICEF is increasing its support for the most devastated regions … securing food, water, sanitation and medicines for more than 25,000 children and mothers.

Representatives from Unicef and other UN agencies have visited many villages… where the storm swept away homes, lives and crops.

This man lost his house.

This woman lost her husband.

In a town in Patuakhali district, 50 year old Rawsha Ara rescued 14 of her neighbors. Upsound – “I don’t know what came over me, she says: “I was going to die but I ended up saving others’ lives.” She says she has seen many storms, but calls this one “Doomsday.”

For the survivors … the concern is about the oncoming winter without shelter. 100,000 blankets plus jerry cans, water purification tablets, children’s clothes and plastic sheeting are being provided.

Based on this and other assessment visits, UNICEF is asking the international community to keep Bangladesh high on its priority.

For young children in particular, many of whom lost parents … physical rehabilitation must include reestablishing daily life through temporary schools.

In the long term, the youngest victims of cyclone Sidr can be helped by not just building back, but building back better.
