* Myanmar Hopes to be Polio Free Again After National Immunization Drive- MIX
* 19 Nov 2007

In Myanmar, more than 7 million children under the age of five are being targeted by a new national immunization campaign aimed at eradicating the crippling disease polio.

Myanmar had been polio free for 5 years, but with 14 new cases confirmed since January, authorities were forced to act to control the problem.

Soundbite (Burmese): Daw Kyin Nu, Midwife, Ya Gyi RHC:
“It is the chance that health care takers like me should not miss to give children lifelong protection against a dangerous disease like polio.”

These national immunization Days are being organized by Myanmar’s ministry of health with support from UNICEF and its partners and essential funding provided by the Government of Japan.

Two rounds of immunization days have been held so far, and another will begin in December. In total, more than ten thousand vaccinators and 30 thousand volunteers will be immunizing children through fixed vaccination sites and as well as going door to door.

Soundbite (Burmese): Daw Than Than Htay, Mother:
“I was informed by a mid-wife that there would be polio vaccinations and since yesterday there have been announcements in town to bring children to the vaccination site. I brought my children to the post because I love them and want them free from polio.”
