In this layer of paint – the walls of this school in the southern province of Zambia is gaining a voice.

SB: (English) (Leonard Mukosha, Ministry of Health, Choma District
“We call them Talking Walls because they are able to talk to individual pupils, 24 hours a day. They are always there, and this has been with great support from UNICEF.

UNICEF and local government and partners helped construct wells, latrines and hand-washing stations here in Choma District. The facilities are largely what boosted enrollment at this school to more than 600 students. The talking walls help emphasize the importance of good hygiene practices.

SB (English):Betty Liawela, Teacher:
Those who can’t read… maybe they have problems or with the language, whatever… they will be able at least, looking at the diagrams to make something out of that and they will learn something, because they will see”

The murals on the talking walls promote better sanitation … hygienic habits … and also the role of good nutrition in school – so that the students too can be heard loud and clear:

SB: (English): Emeldah Mabeta, Student,
“If you have eaten something, maybe the teacher will ask you a question and you raise your hand… ‘Mister, Mister’, but if you have not eaten, you will just sit like this.”
