Qalqilya is a small city North of West Bank. It is completely encircled by the Barrier – a wall that separates the city from the surrounding countryside.

Getting past the barrier requires a permit and it’s making a bad economic situation worse. Unemployment is rising and more than 60 per cent of residents live below the poverty line.

SOUNDBITE: Rami Assaf, YMCA Psychosocial Coordinator (Arabic/English translation)
“Children are suffering because of the Barrier. It has a negative impact on children’s well being. It is worse than other areas because children have no free movement.”

UNICEF works with the YMCA to try and restore a sense of normalcy is children’s lives. For children with disabilities, the chance to have some fun is even more important.

SOT: Anwar Salah, 15 year old girl from Barta (sign/English translation)
“I am very happy, I was drawing and I was playing which made me relax. We are happy here, because we are under stress from school and we like to go out and have fun to release one’s tension”.

SOT: Ayman Daraghmeh, 12 year old boy (sign/English translation)
“I like the balloon game the most and my favourite colour is blue. When I pop the balloon, I am very happy”.
To help restore the childhood of the most disadvantaged UNICEF also works with European Commission Humanitarian Aid office. As well as games, it provides counselling for the stress that is part of their daily lives. But despite the restrictions on their movement, these children continue to dream of a better life.

SOT: Anwar: (sign/English translation)
“I wish to continue my education in college and study English Language so that I can travel to the United States.”
