SOUNDBITE, Ann M. Veneman, UNICEF Executive Director

“We are concerned about all aspects of children’s well-being and safety; beginning with, do they have enough to eat, do they have clean water, are they being exposed to unnecessary health risks -- such as improper sanitation that could spread disease – are they protected, do they have an adult with them, did they lose one or both parents, their siblings? So I think the whole range of issues really impacts the well-being of children and UNICEF is concerned about all of these issues.”

“UNICEF has distributed a number of supplies that were already in-country to prepare for any kind of emergency that would exist. So things like first aid kits, medical equipment and supplies for basic health centers, oral rehydration therapy for children who have diarrhoeal diseases, various kinds of tarps, cooking utensils, things so that people can live with the basic necessities, and support their own day to day life, given that so many people lost their homes, they lost their very existence, they lost their livelihoods. So UNICEF has the basic supplies that will help the community and help families and help children.”

“Today I had the opportunity to meet with the Permanent Representative here in New York, and to talk about the country, what the situation was and also to discuss how UNICEF could most effectively help the children the country. The other thing I discussed with him is that in addition to supply, UNICEF helps with identification of children who may be unaccompanied, protection of children who may need safe places to stay, because they don’t have an adult with them, they’re alone and these are the kinds of things also that UNICEF is very concerned with: it’s protecting the child, particularly that child who may have lost his or her relatives, and may be alone. And we need to be very careful; and we were advocating with the Permanent Representative, that all precaution needs to be taken by the government to ensure that these children are not moved so they will no be subjected to trafficking.”
