You’re watching UNICEF television.

Cyclone Nargis has passed, and the scale of its devastation is slowly being revealed.

Thousands of miles of the Irrawaddy delta are flooded and an estimated million people are in desperate need of fresh water and food, shelter.

UNICEF is racing to save the lives of children who are threatened by the storm’s aftermath.

SOT Ann M. Veneman, UNICEF Executive Director:
“Do they have enough to eat, do they have clean water, are they being exposed to unnecessary health risks -- such as improper sanitation that could spread disease.”

UNICEF is working with its partners, including the government of Myanmar, dispensing emergency supplies to the most stricken areas, and more supplies are on their way.

SOT Louis-George Arsenault, UNICEF Director Emergency Programmes:
“We have two ships right now; sailing as we speak, heading to Myanmar, and we are hoping that by the time they arrive at the dock we will be able to fully access the port, obviously it’s the same thing, the port has been badly damaged, and there’s a lot of logistics to be tackled.”

With a death toll in the tens of thousands … and widely expected to rise … UNICEF is focused on making sure that no more lives are lost due to disease, and that children’s safety and well being are protected.
