More than two weeks after the huge earthquake in China’s Sichuan province … some of the child survivors take a brief moment to escape memories of the disaster.

Games and group therapy begin to ease the children out of the shock and stress of losing homes and loved ones.

These students are among a thousand from boarding schools across Sichuan who have taken up temporary residence at a university in Chengdu. Some journeyed for days to get here. About a third have had no news of their parents

This is the first of what is hoped will be a regular series of activities to help them cope with the psychological and emotional wounds.

Kirsten di Martino (English), UNICEF China Chief of Child Rights
“What we have seen if of course the children arriving and many of them very traumatized by their experience. They are arriving together with their teachers who are also traumatized by their experience and of course the focus in the last few days has been really to try and normalize their situation by giving them accommodation, by making sure they start regular activities such as going to school and also by providing them with group counseling and some sort of psycho-social support and care.”

Classes may have began again for the earthquake survivors but many children are still too stressed to be able to concentrate on their studies.

UNICEF is participating in the Chinese government mission to help all the children recover from the psychological harm they have suffered. In Chengdu it is training volunteers from the university to counsel children and help them return to a sense of normalcy as quickly as possible.
