Earthquake. Their school was damaged but did not collapse. Back in class – in a temporary, more secure facility, they count themselves fortunate. Just across town, the high school was evacuated in less than a minute. But 100 students are still in hospital.

UNICEF, together with the Chinese government, is currently assessing the situation facing schools, which suffered disproportionately in the quake.

More than 10,000 schools in Sichuan were badly damaged … nearly seven thousand totally destroyed.

In all, the number of school children affected is in the millions.

SOUNDBITE DAVID MCLOUGHLIN, Deputy Representative for UNICEF China :“When you think of so many millions of people and 12.2 million children in school and such a high level of earthquake seismic magnitude, its just going to be a disaster for so many. And so many children’s lives and teacher’s lives have been lost. So we have to restore the confidence in the education system.”

Schools in Sichuan are still in need of more temporary shelters and classrooms as well as learning materials, clean toilets and safe water facilities.

Current aid efforts are helping get the children of Sichuan into safe classrooms, and UNICEF is working to ensure that students FEEL safe as well … It is just the beginning of a long rebuilding effort for a battered education system.
