In this remote paddy growing village of Kyein-Chaung, in Laputta, children are finally able to return to the classroom.

Due to the devastation wreaked by the cyclone, the beginning of the new school year in the Irrawaddy Delta has been delayed by one month. Just a few weeks ago, however, the classrooms have been reopened and the local children have returned to school.

SOUNDBITE (Burmese): Mg Nyein Htet Aung, 6, first grader
“I want to become a doctor. Science is my favorite subject and another favorite part of the school is football. I am happy to come here, to our school tent.

SOUNDBITE (Burmese): Ma Nandar Hlaing, 6, first grader
“I want to become a teacher. I have received new books, pencils and beautiful blue school bag from UNICEF.”
After the hardship and traumatic upheavals these children have experienced since the devastating cyclone struck the delta two months ago, it’s incredible to see such enthusiasm in the classroom.

SOUNDBITE(Burmese):, Daw San San Maw, school teacher:
“Our primary school was totally collapsed and everything was destroyed. But UNICEF provided the school tent, essential learning packages, furniture so that children can now continue schooling without much difficulty. We, the teachers, still have a lot of challenges ahead of us…. We must help the children deal with the psychological impact left on the children from the cyclone.

To restore the children’s sense of well-being in this troubled time, UNICEF has advocated “building back better, stronger and more child friendly” schools and has constructed seven model primary schools in seven affected townships in the Irrawaddy Delta.

Despite the hardship and disruptions in their livelihood, these children have regained a sense of hope for a brighter future.
