* UNICEF: A rare day full of play and free of stress for children of the Gaza Strip.
* 시간: 01 min 56 secs
* 17 Jul 2008

Half of the population of the Bedoin town Shoka in eastern Gaza are children. Children with nowhere to play.

For a day of fun, they must take a bus across the gaza strip … away from their shattered homes on the border with Israel.

This day on the beach, provided by UNICEF, ECHO and the Palestinian Center for democracy and Conflict Resolution, is a badly needed respite for children who are more often witnesses of violence and deprivation.

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Ghadeer Al Kilani, 12 year old:
“There aren’t many hospitals, there is no work for our fathers to allow them to earn a living. Half our needs and rights are not fulfilled.
Depression, anger, fear, poor school performance and drop-outs – are common among the children of Gaza.
Recreational and psychosocial programs are gravely needed …

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Qassem Al Rsoud, 12 year old:
“We need playgrounds, we need clubs, we need to play, we need theatres and plays, we need toys.”

SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Abdel Qader Abu Jleidan, Project Coordinator, Palestinian Center for Democracy Conflict Resolution:
When we have activities on a continuous basis, there are positive results. But when, as in the past, we have irregular activities with gaps of up to three months between activities, then the children’s behaviour changes.

In the past year, UNICEF and partners have provided days like this one to some 100,000 children in the West Bank and Gaza. The hope is to restore a sense of celebration to a forsaken childhood.
