* Ready to tackle severe acute malnutrition with a unique food basket
* 02 min 46 secs
* Shoot Country: Various

Rice prices tripled … exports cut … the primary food supply of 3 billion people suddenly unaffordable.

The cost of wheat – up 130 percent – causing bread riots around the world.

Corn, soya, and dairy prices … all on the rise for over a year. And mother nature – making a bad situation, worse. It’s been called a silent tsunami … and those most in danger are the children whose diets are already compromised.

An assault on a child’s nutritional status, whether its due to feeding practises or illness, or as we see now with the shortage of food, household food insecurity … that would cause acute malnutrition.

Malnutrition has many faces. Moderate malnutrition requires high-quality, nutrient rich foods … precisely the resource that food aid agencies are now strapped to provide.

Unchecked – severe acute malnutrition becomes fatal, causing or contributing to the deaths of a million children every year.

Treating these most desperate cases is UNICEF’s mandate. And for the past decade its has relied on a unique food basket to bring the most wasted young bodies back from the brink. These are so-called ready to use therapeutic foods – a fortified paste of peanut, oil, milk, and micronutrients so effective in restoring weight and health, they are known as miracle foods.

Last year, UNICEF bought $80 million dollars worth of Plumpy’Nut and other therapeutic foods, helping save lives in 40 countries.

Mothers can feed their children at home using two sachets of ready to use therapeutic food. They get a supply for one week. They go to a health center once a week to have the child remeasured to make sure the child is regaining weight and also recovering, and given another weeks supply.
