어린이의 교육 받을 권리를 정부에 주창하다

2006.11.16
Two years ago, Meskerem Geremew was out of school and working. Today she attends school every day and has ambitions to travel the world. Soundbite (Amharic) Mesekerem Geremew, aged 12: “I know that it’s important to go to school because a child isn’t supposed to be working and I have a dream to be somebody in the future. I want to be a teacher I want to go to other countries and learn English. I want to change my family’s life.” Meskerem’s chance to get an education is partly due to the efforts of this group of young people – the Ethiopian Youth Forum -- who have been lobbying the government to make it easier for boys, and girls in particular, to go to school. In 2004, on June 16 the Day of the African Child, the Ethiopian Youth Forum organized a survey to try to discover which children were not attending school and to find out why. The survey was carried out by children themselves in an effort to identify their friends and neighbours who were missing out on education. Soundbite (English) Maekelech Gidey, UNICEF Ethiopia Education Officer: “The survey has displayed a great advocacy role so particularly in awareness raising. The problems were there always but sometimes attention was not given. So this itself is a great achievement but still in the future I believe there should still be some follow up action.” Two years later, these founding members of the Ethiopian Youth Forum are still determined to see all their country’s children in school. Soundbite (English) Elleni Muluneh, Founder, Ethiopian Youth Forum: “There is no development without education. The more we educate children the more we become developed in the long run. Build schools make things possible for children. Maybe we will achieve, maybe we will put every child in school” The Ethiopian Youth Forum says they will continue to put pressure on the government fro as long as necessary to ensure all children achieve their right to a basic primary education.
