전쟁피해를 입은 레바논 마을에 긴급물품 지원

2006.12.27
The southern Lebanese border town of El Khiam was severely damaged during the recent conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. With more than 70 percent of houses destroyed, no schools and no running water, most of the remaining people here will leave for the cities of Beirut or Tyre as winter approaches. To help the town’s water supply, UNICEF has put up two temporary water tanks. Throughout the conflict it also trucked bottled water into the area specially labeled with a warning about the dangers of unexploded ordnance. The process of moving aid is easier now. Soundbite Christoph Delaude, UNICEF Logistics. We have an easier access to the south now as before we had to move by convoy. Now we can we move truck by truck and do more precise logistics because we can send some trucks to (some) villages and some others to other villages. So we can separate the convoys as we could not do before. To help families resume their daily lives in this difficult environment, UNICEF has been distributing two truck loads full of hygiene kits. During the distribution, priority is given to those who have lost their homes, the elderly as well as families with young children. Soundbite deputy mayor of El Khiam: Mohammad Abdullah It’s very useful to give these basics. I believe this hygiene pack – soap, towels, something like that, this is very important. Especially for children. The kits are all the more important since public services are in disarray and piles of garbage, not collected for weeks, are rotting at roadsides posing potential health hazards. Meanwhile the children are thrilled at the sight of the box. Especially children like Hassan and his sister, who welcome any distraction from the legacy of war.
