* Education suffers amidst political tension and conflict in Gaza
* 25 Oct 2007

Life in a time of war and uncertainty is never easy, and particularly so for children. Many young students in the Al Qarara village, located in the north east of Khan Younis in the Middle Area of Gaza Strip, find that the basic daily ritual of attending school is often thwarted by political instability.

A thousand students are now registered in Al Maari school located in Al Qararah. The eastern part of this village is exposed to shelling and to IDF military operations.

The recent tightening of border crossings has prevented construction materials from getting to the school, and several important improvements remain to be done.

Recent surveys have shown an alarming failure rate among students in both Arabic and mathematics.

SOUNDBITE, Najwa Mohammed Sumairy, Student in Alma'ary school, 12 years old: “Last year I was getting better grades, but this year I couldn't study much so my grades got worse. In my free time, I watch TV news, and see the clashes between Hamas and Fatah and see people dying. Because we live in the border area, sometimes tanks cross over and I get scared because there will be shootings as a result.”

Not only are children affected, but teachers and administrators are in great need of support.

SOUNDBITE: Ahmed Sumairi, 6TH AND 8TH Grade English Teacher: “The school begins from the first of September and I ask my headmaster and others to bring them. They took four weeks to bring them. This had effects on my students.”

UNICEF is jumping in to help these students and teachers, with support from the Saudi Committee for the Relief of Palestinian People and the Government of the Netherlands. UNICEF has supplied emergency education materials, uniforms, teaching kits, computers and furniture, in addition to teaching support and training.

UNICEF and its partners are also committed to delivering life skills education to strengthen children’s resilience and coping mechanisms in these dangerous and troubled times.
