Thousands of Indonesian boys and girls gathered in Sukabumi West Java to celebrate national scouting day, but this year there was something new.

This year there was a pledge to battle a global threat that has hit this country the hardest – bird flu.

SOUNDBITE ENGLISH VO CG NINA RUSMALINA / GIRL SCOUT:
“If we don’t do something then the virus will spread all over.”

Nina and her friends got together to perform a short play during their annual scout gathering. With a touch of local humor, the scouts showed what people should do if they find a dead chicken in their village.

And on a more serious note showed what could happen if someone in their community contracts bird flu. This may be just a local performance but scenes just like this have been played out in real life in many parts of the country, where the deadly virus has struck.

UNICEF with funding from Canada, has been working in these communities as well as local schools to raise awareness of the disease.

SOT English CG STEVE ASWIN /UNICEF FIELD OFFICE CHIEF:
“Children are agents to bring messages to their families to their parents and last but not least to the whole community.”

Whether by word of mouth, through the media or a public gathering, all bird flu prevention efforts focus on one thing – getting life saving messages out to communities. And in a huge country like Indonesia, this is key to saving lives.
