They look like ordinary children… but the children caught up in the recent conflict in Georgia are bearing the brunt of psychological trauma… and that can be devastating.

SOT Irina Koltunova, Psychiatrist:
“Of course, the recent events have affected them, no question. Their condition – well, it will probably be a while before they are back to normal. You wouldn’t call it critical, but a psychic trauma is a psychic trauma.”

SOUNDBITE:
“Peace is when no one argues, (whoo whoo). When everyone is kind. When there is no war.”

Critical to these children is a return to normal life – something UNICEF is responding to, by delivering school supplies and checking that classrooms are in good condition.

Because of the conflict, many families have been displaced… leaving children frightened and vulnerable.

SOT Svetlana Dobuzova, mother:
“They shot at us on the road. That frightened us all the more. It was very difficult, but it was just as tough to stay home, because we don’t have a safe basement in our house. We barely escaped.”

For those seeking refuge far from home, psycho-social support for children is a high priority… one that is significant for the future… amid the destruction and chaos left in the wake of the conflict.

UNICEF will continue to distribute biscuits until the next harvest. But the rats may persist even longer. The population explosion is caused by the cyclical flowering of the giant bamboo which is expected to remain in bloom for at least two more years.
