A bucket of chlorine disinfectant might not sound like much. But when gallons of dirty floodwater have filled the well that a community depends on for its drinking-water, chlorine saves lives…… Rehabilitating ground wells like this one has been a critical part of UNICEF’s early response to the floods that inundated hundreds of Lao villages last month.

SOUNDBITE : UNICEF water and sanitation officer Bandith Leuanvilay : “The wells are really very dirty after the flooding, so people cannot use them,” says “So Naam Saat engineer come and demonstrate to them how to empty the well, how to use the chlorine in the right way. “

At the temple on the other side of the village, water containers, soap, and other emergency hygiene supplies are arriving. Distribution efforts like this -- coordinated by staff from the Ministry of Health and the National Centre for Environmental Health and Water Supply – have been organized in 11 provinces hit by the flooding.

These supplies are so important for us, says this woman. Now we can protect ourselves against diseases caused by the floods.

Two weeks after the flood levels peaked, parts of the village are still submerged – including one area next to the primary school, where several classrooms were badly damaged, and the desks and tables need replacing as well.

The findings of an assessment survey undertaken by the government, the United Nations and other partners revealed just how extensive the impact of the floods has been. The relief effort now under way aims to ensure that the prospects for development of one of Asia’s poorest countries do not suffer lasting damage.
