Estela Gonzalez is one of dozens of mothers who showed up to have their children vaccinated as part of Vaccination Week in the Americas.

She lives in a small house outside of Asuncion, Paraguay. She has three children who receive free care at this health center, where they will be vaccinated today.

"I am thankful for the health center because it helps keep my children healthy," says Estela, Gonzalez.

"They receive vaccines and regular check ups, which is important because there is a lot of sickness among children."

The day's event features a number of speakers, including top officials from the government, PAHO, UNAIDS and UNICEF.

The crowd is especially happy to hear from two UNICEF Goodwill Ambassadors: Mercedes Barriocanal; and Ricardo Montaner, who tells stories about the dangers he faced as a child.

UNICEF Regional Director Nils Kastberg urges the children to tell their parents they need vaccines to protect them against disease, in the same way a roof over your head offers protection against the rain and the sun.

The media is on hand... to document the first vaccinations, including one with Montaner offering assistance.

All three of the Gonzalez children are receiving vaccinations, including 16-month-old Reinaldo Ortiz. Next up is 12-year-old Jose Osvaldo Moreno. Finally, 10-year-old Ivana Pamela's turn arrives.

They are among some 30 million people health officials are hoping to vaccinate throughout the Western Hemisphere this year.
